iPrism works on any network, regardless of operating systems, servers, and network configuration. This level of integration isn’t the case with other filtering solutions. Software filters are, by nature, platform-specific; it can be difficult to find effective filtering parental control software for Linux® on one hand and comparable filtering software for Mac or Windows on the other. The more heterogeneous the network environment, the harder filtering is to implement. Hardware filtering solutions, usually add-ons or software for the firewall, integrate well with most networks, but suffer from a lack flexibility and fine-grained control over how to block sites.
iPrism is a complete solution — combined hardware and software filtering in a dedicated appliance. iPrism’s filtering appliance is located between the router and firewall, functioning as a transparent bridge. Packets, inbound and outbound, pass through the filtering appliance and two levels of filtering:
- Kernel-level filters, tied in with the operating system, review all packets for the protocol being accessed. iPrism filters multiple Internet protocols for the web, instant messaging, and peer-to-peer. The kernel-level filters check the protocol, not the port being accessed, so programs can’t trick filters by going over normal HTTP ports. Kernel-level filters are twice as fast as filtering software, without increasing network latency.
- Traffic which is allowed through the kernel-level filters is then compared to the access control rules set in the user profiles. The request is compared to the categories in the iGuard database before being sent to the client (web browser) or out of the network. Multiple user profiles allow iPrism to work for a variety of filtering, from business access monitoring or filtering parental control software for Linux®.
